Thanks, Derek. I love getting sliced up. Especially by a sarcastic wordsmith like you. Nice to know that someone's portion of the spiritual gift of sarcasm is bigger than mine. ;-)
Whaddya think? Can people recognize Christ in us without (or in spite of!) it being plastered all over our chests in some corny rip-off of a candy bar or toothpaste or trendy store slogan? Can the testimony of our lives be contained in a box of Testa-Mints? God help us. God help me.
T-Shirts (What We Should Be Known For)
words and music by derek webb
they'll know us by the t-shirts that we wear
they'll know us by the way we point and stare
at anyone whose sin looks worse than ours
who cannot hide the scars of this curse that we all bare
they’ll know us by our picket lines and signs
they’ll know us by the pride we hide behind
like anyone on earth is living right
and isn’t that why Jesus died
not to make us think we’re right
chorus
when love, love, love
is what we should be known for
love, love, love
it’s the how and it’s the why
we live and breathe and we die
they’ll know us by reasons we divide
and how we can’t seem to unify
because we’ve gotta sing songs a certain style
or we’ll walk right down that aisle
and just leave ‘em all behind
they’ll know us by the billboards that we make
just turning God’s words to cheap clichés
says “what part of murder don’t you understand?”
but we hate our fellow man
and point a finger at his grave
they'll know us by the t-shirts that we wear
they'll know us by the way we point and stare
telling ‘em their sins are worse than ours
thinking we can hide our scars
beneath these t-shirts that we wear

Testa-mints! Ha! Our old church used to sell those. Xenos doesn't, thank God.
I like this song a lot. Derek Webb has gotten a bit too cynical for me to handle in more than small doses anymore, but I do like him once in awhile.
In the car today, I heard "Mockingbird" (have you heard it? I think you can download that CD at freederekwebb.com or something). I'm feeling like I can really relate to that song lately, realizing that half of the spiritual advice I give to others, I can barely live up to myself. But that that's still okay.
"I can't afford to pay for most of what I say; so it's a lucky thing that the truth's public domain..."
I've actually found myself listening to Derek more lately--maybe it's just because I've been in a really cynical state of mind for awhile. I like the Mockingbird stuff and I have I See Things Upside Down (I think that's the name of it--too lazy to go look).
Speaking of music...guess who's coming to Fairfield!!! (Hint: It's NOT Derek Webb.)
Hmmm...Charlie?
ac/dc?
Charlie! :-)
In May or June, maybe...Godstock's starting a "coffeehouse" concert series and I've begged and pleaded enough that I finally got a "yes" from my cohorts.
I'm VERY excited. (Much more than I would be about AC/DC...but we'd probably make more money with them!)
Fun! That sounds like it will be a great show.
Recently, our friends who hosted him in their basement (for our informal "pub show") had another acoustic artist play down there, and apparently the poor girl just didn't measure up (of course, with Charlie being the first show they've had down there, he set the bar pretty high). I didn't go, but all I kept hearing afterward was, "She was good, but she was no Charlie Dodrill." Apparently our one friend made a comment like that in the middle of her show, then shook his head and said, "Man--how'd we ever get someone that good to come here??"
